Finding Images

There are two main ways to find images on Bugwood Video: Browsing and Searching

Browsing for images:

To start browsing, you must select a starting point. Options for the starting point include commodity groups (i.e. crops), taxonomy, damage type, organization, and location. After you have selected a starting point, you can use the sidebar to the left to narrow down the images based on what you are looking for. The top section of filters narrows results by subject specific browsing filters. These consist of:

Type
Type is the broad grouping that a subject falls into. For example, diseases, insects, nematodes, plants, management, etc.
Category
Category is a sub group of type. It is a narrow grouping that a subject falls into. For example with the type plants there consists categories of crops, parasitic and epiphytic plants, vines, aquatic, ferns, shrubs, etc.
Taxonomy
Taxonomy is the science of classifying organisms. There are seven classification levels (Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species). Each becomes more specific towards to the bottom. Any level above species can be selected as a starting point

The second set of filters narrow results by image specific filters. These consist of:

Descriptor
Descriptors are applied to specific images. Only one descriptor can be applied to any one image. Descriptors are used to define the part of the organism in the image or the type of activity being performed in the image. For example, within the commodity of cotton there consists of adults, larva, damage, equipment, fruit, etc.
Gender
Gender consists of male, female or pairs.
Male
an individual that produces small gametes which fertilize the eggs of a female. Female: an individual that produces large gametes that are fertilized by small gametes of a male.
Pair
Used when both a male and female are present in the image. Often these images show the mating behavior.
Image Setting
Image setting is used to describe the setting of an image. The options for this are: Field: Images taken outdoors or in the natural environment where something is found.
Laboratory
Images taken when a live or fresh specimen has been brought indoors or away from its natural habitat to be photographed. This can be used if significant staging has been done to set the subject against a background and a reference object has been included to give a sense of scale.
Museum
Images are taken in a very controlled environment and often the specimen or sample is preserved.
View
View refers to the side of the specimen that was photographed or the scale at which the photo was taken. For example, dorsal, lateral, anterior-lateral, anterior, posterior, etc.
Country
Country refers to the place where the image was taken at. For example, the United States, France, India, Australia, Honduras, Germany, etc.
Author
Author refers to the photographer who took the image. Every author is shown who has taken a photo on that topic.
Sizes Available
Sizes available refers to the image size that is available for use. These consist of all 5 sizes, 4 sizes or 3 sizes available. Depending on what you will be using the image for depends on which size you will need.
Orientation
Orientation refers to vertical or horizontal. Landscape (horizontal) or portrait (vertical) can be chosen. Depending on what you will be using the image for depends on what orientation you need.

You can view the results of your browsing in 3 different formats:

View Subject List
The subject list shows all subjects on the IPMImages site that deal with your starting point browse. They are listed by subject name, scientific name and the number of images each has in that subject. Each blue link can be clicked on to and will take you to that subject’s thumbnail page.
View Image Details
The image details page shows a table that lists all images on that subject that are available on IPMImages. Listed are: image number, subject name, scientific name, and description. Each blue image link can be clicked on to view the detail page for the image.
View Thumbnails
The thumbnails page shows all available thumbnails of all images on the subject you are browsing for. On this page, the image thumbnail is shown and below it are its image identification number, subject name, scientific name, and photographer. Each image can be clicked on to view the detail page for the image. Unlike the View Image Details and View Subject List options, you cannot sort this view. You can however, page through the results using the controls at the top and bottom of the page.

Table Controls for (View Image Details and View Subject List):

Table Controls

Despite the fact that the View Image Details and View Subject List tables contain different information, they can be sorted and navigated in the same way. At the top of each column there is a set of arrows. One is up, the other is down. These arrows allow you to reorder, either A to Z, Z to A or numerically, the rows below in that same column. When you click on the column you want to reorder, that column box turns orange. If you click that same column box again, it reorders that column the opposite direction. You can also reorder multiple columns at one time by holding down the Shift key and clicking the columns you want to reorder.

Above the columns of the table there are additional arrows and a display box. The double arrows pointing right take you to the next page of information to the right. The double arrows pointing left take you to the next page of information to the left. The single arrow pointing right with a bar takes you to the last page of information. The single arrow pointing left with a bar takes you to the first page of information. The display box is a drop down with the numbers 60, 120, 240 and 480. This means that is the number of information it shows on the page. For example, 60 show 60 subjects to the page and 480 shows 480 subjects to the page.

NOTE: If the table contains more than 2,000 subjects or images the table controls do not work because it takes too long for the webpage to load and may even crash certain web browsers.

A search bar is located in the upper left corner of every BugwoodImages webpage. Here you can type in what you are looking for, click the search button and images will appear on that topic.

If search words match commodity, subject name, scientific name or an old scientific name, additional links appear to help you narrow your search. This is called the exact search page, meaning your search matched a subject exactly. These additional links include:

Exact Search Match
Go to Subject Page
This link takes you to the image subject page you just searched for in the search bar. From here you can use the image specific side bar to help narrow your search further. NOTE: The subject specific filters will not appear on the side bar because there are no more options to filter from because you are on the subject page.
Go to Commodity Page
This link takes you to the image commodity page you just searched for in the search bar. From here you can use the subject specific and image specific filters to narrow your search further. NOTE: The subject specific filter appears on the side bar because only the commodity has been chosen, not the subject.
View Selected Images
This link takes you to the selected images page that has been selected for that species. These images consist of a small group of images that best represents that species. From here you can send all these images to your Light Box with the Send to Your Light Box link. NOTE: This link will only appear if the scientific name is searched for in the search bar.
