Mesquite Control: Stem Sprays & Seed Dispersal

Description

  • ...by applying certain herbicides to the stem base. Because this application site is so close to the bud zone and the root crown, the season of application and growth state of the mesquite are less important. In general, herbicide stem sprays are affective any time of the year, but they work best if applied mid-summer when the mesquite leaves are dark green and the weather is hot.
  • Mesquite produces many seeds which spreads the plant to new areas.
    • These seeds are dark brown, hard, and contained in a pod-like fruit or bean which is relished by many species of wildlife and domestic livestock.
    • A very hard, impervious seed coat enables mesquite seeds to lie in the soil and remain viable for many years.
    • The seed coat surrounding each seed must be deteriorated or damaged before it can germinate.
    • The seeds remain dormant on or in the soil until freezing, thawing, and abrasion slowly break down the seed coat.
